Itinerary
Day One: Succumb to the beckoning of the quiet splendor of New England. Come to where the old thrives with the new – rich in history and tradition. Begin your journey to a time gone by with arrival in historic “Bean Town,” Boston, Massachusetts where we will be met by our Tour Guide and deluxe Motorcoach at Logan Airport. We will enjoy a brief city tour as we make our way to our overnight accommodations North of Boston.(D)
Day Two: Today, we will tour the north shore of Massachusetts, known as Cape Ann from Salem to Rockport. The foliage along these country roads is some of the most spectacular in New England. We will begin in the bewitching town of Salem, famous or infamous for the Witch Trials of 1692. Once a prosperous shipping center, many handsome old homes date from this era. We will follow the rocky coast north to Gloucester, which is well known for its active commercial fishing. The entire region continues to have an important fishing industry, which has been memorialized, at the Fisherman’s Monument in Gloucester. From here, we will continue to Rockport, site of a well-known artist’s colony. All the former fishing shanties have been adapted into small shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Bring your cameras as this is also the home of Motif #1 one of the most photographed buildings in America. We will then travel north through New Hampshire to visit Kennebunkport, Maine, summer home of President Bush, before continuing on to Portland, Maine. We will tour Portland, Maine's largest city and birthplace of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. This is his “beautiful town that is seated by the sea.” Tonight we will overnight in the Portland, Maine area.(B, D)
Day Three: This morning, we will depart Maine and drive through the lake country on our way to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The most spectacular feature of the White Mountains is Mt. Washington at 6,288' and known for some of the worst weather in the world. We will drive along the Kancamagus Highway, one of New England's most spectacular scenic highways. During fall foliage season, the mountains are ablaze with yellows, oranges, and reds. We will check into our overnight hotel for the next two nights nestled in the heart of the White Mountains. Day Four: This morning, our day will be spent traveling through the lakes region of New Hampshire. Our tour includes a Cruise of Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state. Winnipesaukee translates from its Native American to "Beautiful Place in High Waters," which it truly is. We will view Squam Lake, the setting for the movie 'On Golden Pond' and popular for its Loon population. During fall foliage season the mountains are ablaze with yellows, oranges, and reds. We will then ride to the top of Cannon Mountain on the first aerial passenger tramway in North America for a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.(B, D)
Day Five: Today, our travels take us to the Green Mountain State of Vermont basking in charming Americana scenery at every turn. We travel to Montpelier, Vermont where we will see the gold-leafed dome of the Capitol Building and see how Maple Sugar is made at the Morse Farm Sugar Shack, where we will enjoy “Sugar on Snow.” Then, we take to the roads again stopping at Cold Hollow Cider Mill; New England’s most famous cider mill. We will observe apple cider being made and perhaps even have the chance to taste the final product! Next, we will tour world famous Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory. We will see first hand the entire ice cream manufacturing process from Cow to Cone. We will arrive at our overnight accommodations for the next two nights in Central Vermont and enjoy dinner.(B, D)
Day Six: Our journey today begins to Quechee Gorge, Vermont's "little Grand Canyon" to take pictures. Then, we will visit the village of Woodstock, noted for its well-preserved vintage homes, its village green and covered bridge in the middle of town. You will be mesmerized by the panorama as you wind past perfectly restored historic buildings and homes, open to the sprawling Woodstock Village Green. Woodstock treasures include the 200-year old Woodstock Inn, the Billings Farm & Museum and the Covered Bridge. Indulge yourself with a stroll around the Green, through the Covered Bridge, browse the mecca of quaint shops and galleries - let your senses be aroused in this quintessential New England village. Next stop, Plymouth Union, the birthplace of President Calvin Coolidge, considered being the best preserved presidential birthplace in the nation.
Visit the old general store, the old Union Church, Wilder Barn or Plymouth Cheese Factory built in 1890 by his father. Not just a summer White House, this was the family homestead, as he and six generations of his family are all buried nearby. Then, it’s on to Weston, home of the Vermont Country Store, where you will find items you thought had long since disappeared, such as, penny candy and flour sack towels, as well as many other useful, practical items and artifacts from the past. It is like shopping in a museum. There is also the Weston Playhouse, once an old church, transformed into an up-to-date theatre on the green. The elegant Greek Revival building is considered one of America’s most beautiful playhouses. Take time to visit and see all the famous actors who have performed here! Dinner is planned for us before retiring for the night (B, D)
Day Seven: Our journey takes us through the Green Mountains where the hills give way to valleys with colonial homes and pastoral farmlands. We will travel to the rolling hills of the Berkshires in western Massachusetts. This area offers a kaleidoscope of wonderful things to see and do. Colonial and Victorian historic sites, lush gardens, towns and villages straight from the greeting cards of “Currier & Ives” are enroute. Our destination is Stockbridge Village, Norman Rockwell country, and the inspiration for his paintings and sketches is everywhere. We will visit the Norman Rockwell Museum, housing not only the artist’s studio, as he left it, but the world’s largest collection of America’s most beloved artists’ work. We will then travel to Old Sturbridge Village, a 200-acre recreated living history museum. Explore this 1830’s working farm and 40 original buildings and enjoy the costumed people at work. You will feel as though you have been transported back in time! We will arrive at our Sturbridge area hotel before enjoying a New England style dinner. (B, D)
Day Eight: We will depart our hotel for the airport and our departure flight home taking with us fond memories of our New England foliage tour. (B)
