Day One - Monday December 9: Arrival and Tour Brooklyn Christmas Lights (D)
It’s Christmas time in the City, as we are welcomed to New York City! The media capital of the world and largest metropolitan area in the country, it is a place of relentless energy burning with world-class attractions and experiences. Upon arrival at the airport our tour guide and motorcoach will greet us, and we will travel to our Times Square hotel to check in before heading to Brooklyn for a dazzling spectacle of holiday lights. We will begin in Dumbo, Brooklyn the home of Jane's Carousel the classic 3-row machine with 48 exquisitely carved horses and two superb chariots. It was created in 1922, the heyday of the American Carousel by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, designated as PTC. No 61. We will have dinner at Carmines nearby before we visit the neighborhoods of Dyker Heights, a neighborhood know for decades as a bastion of Italian Americans who take Christmas very seriously. Its holiday tradition is to decorate house after house with thousands of lights, toy soldiers, Santa Claus with his reindeer and more. It is spectaculary amazing. Dyker Heights has been made famous in the PBS Documentary Dyker Lights and seen on TLC's Crazy Christmas Lights. We will return to Manhattan and our hotel for the night.
Day Two - Tuesday December 10: Full Day City Tour & Rockettes (D, E)
Today we will enjoy a full day tour of New York City by motorcoach. We will begin with the 9/11 Tribute Museum Guided Walking Tour on the Memorial Plaza. It is a unique and fulfilling opportunity to learn about September 11th from those directly affected. Led by 9/11 survivors, first responders, civilian volunteers and recover workers, all of the Tribute's volunteer guides have a personal and profound connection to 9/11 and share their stories daily on the Memorial Plaza, Learn about the history of Lower Manhattan and the World Trade Center, the 1993 bombing, 9/11 and the recovery and rebuilding of Lower Manhattan on this walking tour. We will also have a one hour private guided tour of the National September 11 Memorial Museum opened as the country's principal institution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring 9/11's continuing significance.
From here we will go to Radio City Music Hall for a Stage Door Tour, where a guide will lead our exploration of the beautiful art-deco interiors, learn the secrets of the Great State, the stage's hydraulic system, and meet up close and in person one of the world-famous Radio City Rockettes.
Then it is off to Central Park! Here is where the residents of the city come to play. In 1857 the city father's determined that the city was growing so fast that it had to set aside land that was never to be developed and they did so with 778 acres to the north of all the development. Since then the city has grown around the park making it part of Midtown and the Upper sides of Manhattan critically located very centrally. As we go around the Park we will see many famous sites including: The Dakota, Strawberry Fields, Tavern on the Green, Horse Drawn Carriages, Cherry Hill and much more.
Then it is back to Rockefeller Center for dinner at the Rock Center Cafe overlooking the ice rink and surrounded by original prints by Andy Warhol. Then it is across the street to Radio City Music Hall for the Christmas Spectacular, everybody's favorite show since 1933, polished up and brighter than ever. The magic of Christmas will surround us throughout the theater. After a long wonderful day of meeting this great city we will sleep well before we start again tomorrow!
Day Three - Wednesday December 11: Lower Manhattan & Rockettes (L, E)
Today, we will have a great mix of activities beginning with touring of some of the villages of Manhattan on our way to the East Side and the United Nations building. We will see Greenwich Village, China Town Little Italy - including the site of some of the scenes from the Godfather. Then we will have an early lunch in the UN Delegates Dining Room. This is one of Manhattan's best kept secrets! DRESS CODE is required as proper business casual - no jeans, sneakers or short pants permitted; collared shirts and jackets for men are preferred. Our hotel is surrounded by many of the great theaters all within a couple of easy walking blocks.
